Nearly ten years ago I built the first version of this rack so that I could haul my family’s skis and luggage
conveniently in my pickup truck with a topper. Even with a full-sized truck, I was always throwing the
skis on top of the luggage in the truck bed when we’d go somewhere. When you have sharp edges from
half a dozen pair of race skis and a bunch of soft gear and luggage bags occupying the same space it
often ends badly. Cuts in gear bags or luggage, tangled skis, and scratched up ski equipment were all
too common. The rack gave me a way to keep all our skis organized and elevated off the truck bed
which doubled the useable space. We could keep all of our other bags and gear in the truck bed while
the skis were easily accessible at tailgate height. At the end of the day, we’d load the skis in the rack,
bindings down, so they could drip off without worrying about the edges rusting. After receiving many
compliments on my racks over the years, I decided to make them available to everyone.
